Buhoma Primary School

The school, Buhoma Community primary school was started by the community with an aim to help the orphaned children under the names of Bwindi Orphans Primary School in 1996.As the parents saw the progress of the school, they decided to send their children to the school and hence the name of the school had to change from Bwindi Orphans Primary school to Buhoma Community Primary school because it would seem meaningless to call it an orphans school yet it has even children with parents, and pygmies who had parents. So the school management saw it necessary to change the names to stop miss leads of the public and visitors. We have 3 categories of children in our school and these are;

  1. We have the orphans and these include single orphans and double orphans.

  2. We have the very poor and needy children who are at school and do not pay school fees.

  3. And we have those children with parents who pay school fees.

The school is located in South western Uganda, Kanungu District, Kayonza Sub county, Mukono Parish, Buhoma Village 2kilometers from the park.

Our children pay 100$ us dollars per year and it includes lunch, tuition, books, pens and pencils, and uniform. Then a Boarder will need 400$ us dollars and that will include boarding fees, lunch supper, breakfast, uniform, medication, books and pens. Its true we are in Bwindi, about 2 kilometers from the park headquarters. There is one school close to ours about two kilometers. The other similar school is 17 kilometers away from Bwindi. Its true the Government gives money to schools which are government founded but does not give it to private schools.

The school sofar has got 448 children with 9 classrooms.ie pre-primary and primary levels up to primary seven.

Around 30%of the population in the Bwindi area can manage to take their children to school because its the only percentage that generates income in their homes.This is one of the main aim of the school to improve literacy in the area.

WHY THE DORMITORY/INFIRMARY IS NEEDED

I personally believe that a dormitory is necessary at Buhoma community primary school because at least more than half the school population comes from as far as 10 km per day to school which has taken the academic standards of the school backward because children reach home late and worn out,hungry and find no food at home,no paraffin to light and hence no time to read and revise.A dormitory will improve the academic standards,health status as there is also an infirmary,and increase the children's love to study.

I have made consultations and they have told me that all those projects,chicken,flower and vegetable cna cost 7,000,000 Ugandan shillings.Which is appriximately 4116 US dollars.
